Hello. Thank you for your question and we hope all is well. Sound can be subjective, so it would be hard to say if you personally like it better than your Onkyo, but it does have more power than the Onkyo and should drive your speakers more efficiently. The MP500 is a power amp and you technically don't need a pre-amp, however, it would typically be paired with one because it doesn't have all the inputs a pre-amp would have and doesn't have a remote. If someone had preouts on their a/v receiver or pre-amp, they could use the MP500 with it. Your Onkyo unfortunately doesn't have preouts so you would need another preamp or a/v receiver to work with it. Note, it can still be used without one, but we just wanted to make sure you were aware of the limitations before considering it.
