The exhaust fan only comes on automatically if the unit becomes hot while your using the microwave . As it sits over our kitchen stove it will come on if I heat something on the stove for a long period of time on high heat. If your going to do that it is best to turn the fan on before it turns on automatically. If you do that, usually you can turn it off when your through cooking and not have to wait for the microwave fan to go off on it's own.
