We had same problem. Bought extended warranty.

For one (1) year from the original retail purchase date on your receipt, any part which fails in normal home use will be repaired or replaced free of charge. YEARS TWO (2) THROUGH TEN (10) FROM DATE OF ORIGINAL PURCHASE (CERTAIN COMPONENT PARTS ONLY - LABOR NOT INCLUDED): Maytag will pay for factory-specified replacement parts for the component parts listed below to correct non-cosmetic defects in materials or workmanship in these parts that prevent function of this major appliance and that existed when this major appliance was purchased: Compressor.
