We also recommend using HE powder detergent because it has the best pH balance to remove protein-based stains found in cloth diapers. While everyone has their own method for getting the best clean, we have a few recommendations you can try. You can pre-soak cloth diapers in a mixture of warm water and HE powder detergent that has an enzyme (check the detergent’s label on the box to check for this ingredient). Let the cloth diapers soak in this mixture for about 20-30 minutes. Then, wash the diapers in your washing machine per the detergent’s dosing guidelines (also found on the package). Personally, I first rinse my diapers in cold water, and then I do a soak followed by a normal or heavy duty hot wash, followed by a cold rinse. If your washer has the Steam cycle, I would certainly recommend using that to assist with any stains as it automatically adds an additional soak and wash time. The cycle combinations you might want to try if you don't have steam would be the following: Select soak, then select either the heavy duty or normal cycle with hot water/cold rinse. You may also want to select an additional rinse as well. You can also try without the soak cycle; however I've found additional soaking time greatly helps in cleaning the cloth diapers. If your washer has Steam, I would suggest selecting a hot normal or heavy duty cycle with cold rinse and also selecting the "steam for stains" cycle as well as selecting an additional rinse. Again, it's recommended to first either do a cold rinse or short cold wash to remove any loose soils on the diapers. Doing a hot wash right away can cause stains and/or odors to set into the diapers.
