Lid on this unit stays unlocked until the rinse and spin cycles start... We were used to the old style Top loader and a lot has changed on the new models. The HE washers are definitely different from traditional, and I'm not sure if I'm really saving money on the water bill as we end up using the high water setting a lot. If I were choosing again today, would probably choose a traditional washer and go with a Speed Queen.

When this light is lit, the lid is locked and cannot be opened. When this light is blinking, the washer is paused. When this light is off, the lid can be opened. After a cycle is started, the washer will fill to the appropriate water level. When the washer is done filling, it will start to agitate. If you need to open the lid to add a garment after this point, the lid will remain unlocked during the entire agitation portion of the wash phase. The cycle will automatically pause when the lid is opened, and the cycle will resume once the lid is closed. The lid will lock before the spin phase begins. If you need to pause or stop after this point, you must press the START/PAUSE button and wait for the lid to unlock. The lid will only unlock after washer movement has stopped. Depending on when in the cycle you try to pause, it may take several seconds to several minutes for the lid to unlock. Press START/PAUSE to resume the cycle
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You have to pause and wait till it unlocks before you can open it..and fyi my washer is not even 2 months old and the lid lock is broken leaving my washer useless..last maytag 20 years this one less than 2 months and it needs service
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The lid DOES lock, but you are able to unlock it at any time. All you do is is hold Start/pause button down for 3 seconds and it will stop. If washer is going at momment it will of course take awhile for the washer to unlock. Because it is spinning at the time. Once it's done spinning it will unlock and you'll be able to open the lid. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Dear Anonymous, The lid automatically locks once it's started. For the lid to be reopened, you need to hold the start button for 3 seconds for the washer to shut down then the lid can be opened. Hope that helps.
