Yes Maytag was independent popular company and acquired by Whirlpool. This particular model have originated by Maytag but modify by Whirlpool with best efficiency and savings of energy (Elec) as well as water too. Design of agitator as spinning base plate is outstanding for the great result of washing clothes by eliminating old design.
