“Specifically, does any Maytag models have child locks that keep the door from being opened while the washer is in use? Ie. our current outdated and defunct Samsung washer that when you push "start" you hear a click and you can no longer lift the door.”

Yes. This washer senses the load then locks for the entire cycle. If opened during sensing (even if immediately closing the lid again) the control panel flashes until the start button is pushed again.
