Do I need this to be able to use the vr headset? null

I was able to use my Quest (NOT THE QUEST 2, hasnt arrived yet to test) with a third party usb-cable just fine, but did purhcase the Oculus one here bc its longer and will definitely work. Most of the third party cables that work are only 10ft or less. Keep in mind the link cable is just so you can play wired PC Oculus games, you can be totally wireless playing any native Quest game. Hope that helps.

The cable was made for the Oculus Quest to be able to connect it to your gaming PC if you have one. It's not needed to use the headset as the Oculus Quest is one of the few stand alone headsets and you can play the games directly on it. You can buy more games through the headset or on the Oculus website or on the Oculus app on your phone. The Oculus app on your phone is needed to setup the Oculus Quest. If you want access to more games and higher quality games, then you would buy the Link cable and plug the headset into your gaming PC. You would also need to install the Oculus software as well. I am hoping that the Oculus Quest supports streaming games over WiFi instead of a cable at some point, but no plans that I am aware of as of now. There is another option called Virtual Desktop that gives you access to steam games and oculus rift games wirelessly, but you need a 5ghz router with your gaming pc hard wired and have a good setup. The cable also works with the Oculus Quest 2 now as well.
