You do not have to be a student to purchase this. I am not a student myself and I purchased it along with my MacBook. I think it is mainly titled Office Home & Student because it does not offer some of the software some of the professional suite offers. It essentially has full functionality, but is keeps the software to bare bones, namely, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Onenote, and Outlook. If that's all you need, then this is perfect!

It is for both. I'm home and I've been using the Home and Student for years. No problems, no differences.
