“I have an iMac with two older versions of Office ( 2008 and 2011 ) with Word, Excel, Powerpoint. do I have to do anything to those applications prior to loading Office Home & Student 2019 ?”

I might be wrong, but I don't believe you have both versions 2008 and 2011 on your system. Usually when you load a new version, especially on a Mac, it updates you to the new version, replacing the old version. Your 2011 version should open everything that was saved using the 2008 verion, Purchasing and installing the latest version gives you functionality that you might not of had on previous versions. The new version should open ALL files from the previous version(s). Hope this helps.
