“Does this item go into the controller just like the double As, so that the back can cover it? Or does it replace the back? I don't want to have a big black square on the back of my red or white controllers.”

Replaces the AA batteries and fits with the back the controller came with

Fits exactly like AAs, the cover snaps back in place as usual.

It goes in just like AAs and you can use the controllers battery cover with it. If you got a red controller you can still use the red back cover with it.

It goes In the back of your controller just like the batteries do, and you can put the cover back on. I just bought the Xbox one sports white controller and didn't want to replace the whole back so I went with these. Hope this helped.
