“Does the installer format the drive first? A lot of the questions here ask about installing on a new hard drive, but don't mention if those drives were formatted or not. I will be installing on a brand new hard drive that is probably not formatted.”

As long as you are booting this from a USB 3.0 drive, it will install to your brand-new hard drive. I did this; the installer leads you through steps to prepare the drive appropriately.
