“If the controller is the newer xbox one s controller, than what is the need for the adapter? Couldn't i just connect the controller to my pc via bluetooth and still use it wirelessly without any drop off in performance?”

You can use it via Bluetooth but this is Microsoft's proprietary wireless solution and it works so much better. I tried via Bluetooth and it was a pain.
