• You can play your own games. The subscription is for additional games on the Xbox Game Pass and microsoft xbox has promotions on the subscription.

• You do not need a monthly subscription to play your games. However if you want to play them online with other people then yes you need to pay for the live service.

• A monthly subscription is not necessary unless you plan to play online-only games or online multiplayer. In that case, you will need an active Xbox Live Gold membership.
