“Can AA or AAA batteries be used in place of the battery packs?”

• Yes they can. I own the X-Talker T71VP3. Click the product manual link , on page 5 under heading Battery Installation you will find the following statement : “ Your radio operates with either a NiMH battery pack or optional 3 AA alkaline batteries”

• No, this set requires the rechargeable batteries.
