This watch does show time even without a phone. However, to use smart features it must be connected to a Wi-Fi network.

After the first initial setup, he may tell the time and use a number of Wifi only applications (like Facebook Messenger) or Record voice with applicable products (using apps like Recordr). Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It won't do much - in fact it won't even tell time. The watch depends on it's connection to a smart phone for everthing, including the time. He should either save for a smartphone or look at a conventional watch.
