2.0 and 3.0 are compatible with each other. Whatever your main unit is (laptop, in this case) is what will depend if the speed of transfer (2.0 or 3.0). If you have a 3.0 laptop but a 2.0 cord, it will be 2.0 transfer. If you have a 2.0 laptop and 3.0 cord, it will be a 2.0 transfer.
