Yes, water can get underneath it when washing hands. I don't wear it in the shower and have not worn it swimming as of yet.

It must get wet, although it does dry out. I swim in a pool a lot and take the guard off occasionally. It never seems to have any water under it that I can tell.

I do not swim or shower with the watch but I do not have a problem with water getting trapped underneath while washing my hands.
