Yes you can. Same reason I purchased it for my wife. We also have direct and a local channel was dropped. Works best the closer you are to a major city. My wife has a spare TV in the den which she hooked the antenna to. You have to make sure you set the TV from cable to antenna mode(In your TV settings) Then you scan the channels and your local channels should come in. Keep in mind that weather may affect your reception at times. Hope this was helpful.

I added a copper wire loop to it and it picked up a total of 21 channels. I live in Leander and it receives the Austin channels and one in Bryan and Houston. It is awesome!
