If you're on a free plan at Google Photos, your photos are down-scaled to 16MP. In order to save the original resolutions, you will need to pay monthly fees according to your usage. With Monument, all your photos and videos are stored in their original resolution without having to pay monthly fees. Moreover, Monument provides true privacy and security for your photos. When using hard drives, you will need to do all the hard work manually: transferring files, moving them to drive, and organizing them. Moreover, you can not access your content when you're away or your computer is off. Monument is a dedicated, always on device for your photos and videos. You can also create users and share photos and albums with each-other. Last but not least, it can also create additional backups in case your primary drive fails. Hope this clarifies your question. Please let us know if you have any questions.

You basically have your OWN cloud storage for your photos/videos and there are several strong advantages to that. Privacy - No one can access your photos but you. Google can and definitely does scan photos with the software on their servers and it's anyone's guess what they actually do with the data (geotags, facial recognition, etc. etc.), if you don't care then it's not a big deal but if you do then this might be a compelling reason. Your photos aren't stored on some random server somewhere in the world. Storage - Limited to what you set it up with .. Google Photos definitely has limits on resolution 16MP and video to 1080p unless you pay for storage - Monument does not. The photo backup feature is cool because once backed up you can go in the app and have monument clean up photos on your phone that have already been backed up saving TONS of time. This is not something Google Photos will do in all situations on all devices. Multi-device support - Google Photos doesn't automatically separate photos from different devices like a digital camera vs. an android or iPhone Mac/PC Support - There is software for Monument on the PC/Mac - Google photos is completely web-based and there is no software or App for the computer.

So, even if my PC is shut down, I still can upload & access my photos! While I was away on Vacation, my PC at home was off, but I was still able to access all of my photos from my smart phone. I also showed and explained the features to family members and everybody loves the benefits.
