Will this work on iphone xs max? null

It rarely works with my iPhone XS Max, since I have an Otterbox case. When I switch to a Mophie case (somewhat thinner), it works better, but still has to be positioned several times, before it starts charging.

Yes it shoild work. I have an iPhone X with a thick Otterbox case and no problems.
