No, you have to be paired with a phone.

Not very well. It can sync to your phone using WiFi even when your phone is not in range for Bluetooth but I've found that type of connection to be buggy. Also, if you WANTED to do this, you'd have to have Bluetooth headphones to pair with your watch - it has a microphone but no speaker so you wouldn't be able to hear the other side of a phone conversation. You can use your voice to send short text messages very easily though - I do that a lot even when my phone is nearby.
