The former allows you to use the SD card for photos and such but I do not think you can store apps on it. You can read the card in other devices. Internal memory formatting allows you to store apps but the SD card cannot be read on other devices. Some have complained that certain 32 GB SD cards internally formatted can have issues after a couple of weeks of use. The phone thinks the card has been removed when it has not. Sometimes powering the phone on and off resolves the issue, sometimes it does not. I had this problem with a Samsung 32 GB SD card, but the phone has been working fine with a 16 GB SanDisk SD card
