An unlocked phone is not "locked" to one cell phone provider. It may be used with any provider (sprint, verizon, at&t...etc.) that supports it. It links to the provider by way of a sim card which the provider typically supplies. You get to select the provider and are not stuck staying with them. MAKE SURE YOUR DESIRED PROVIDER SUPPORTS THE UNLOCKED PHONE THAT YOU CHOOSE.

Low cost replacement option for broken phones that can't be salvaged without an upgrade option. Only applicable to phones with a removable SIM card so no Apple products.
