Yes you can make 1 cup but a cup is only 5 ounces which is around half a mug. 4 cups is 20 ounces.

It doesn't work like a Keurig or one of those styles, so it's not recommended to brew just one cup at a time. 3-4 cups is the minimum they recommend.
