I would recommend paper filters or even a mesh filter if you can find one...(Walmart). If no filters used, will have grounds in your cup for sure. Also, the brew basket on this model is extremely sensitive. I only hand washed and it broke within 2 weeks.

Yes, you need paper filters. Either that, or you need to purchase a permanent one. Best Buy's product description erroneously states that this machine (model# JWX3-RB) comes with a permanent filter. I just bought a JWX3-RB machine this morning from Best Buy, and no permanent filter was included in the box. (The user manual, which is apparently shared by all machines in the JW series, says that the permanent filter is included with some models, but not all.)

Comes with a filter but I use a triangle paper filter for ease of getting rid of coffee grounds.
