This machine only makes espresso style drinks. For "plain" coffee, you would make an espresso shot, and then add hot water so the concentration would be similar to brewed coffee. (Called an Americano.) You can choose a single shot or double shot; adding water makes those about 4 oz and 8 oz, depending on how strong you want it. This machine makes great lattes'. Espresso brewing makes fantastic tasting plain coffee, much better than brewed, but it is more work than simply making electric drip coffee. Before spending $$$ money on an espresso machine, try an Americano at Starbucks to see if you like it. I prefer the "Blond" roast. The machine does not have a timer. For excellent coffee at a much lower price, consider the AeroPress manual brewer.
