Would this work with a 8th gen intel i5 8400 null

This will not work with an i5 8th gen 8400. Those chips use lg1151 sockets on the motherboard. This msi motherboard uses socket lg1200. You need to find a mother board model z390.

Doubtful - it's "designed for" 11th gen and the 8th gens I'm fairly certain don't have a Socket LGA1200.
