It is controlled by a knob on the back that works like a joystick, the windows thing is I am pretty sure like any normal monitor, and if you set the sound to output to the monitor it will come out of only the monitor, I think whenever it's plugged in it automatically sets it to the monitor sound, and you can display it to the monitor from the laptop but still use headphones

From there, you will be able to control the volume coming through the monitor in control center like any other device. There is no problem utilizing other speakers.
