• Yes, it works well with the I5. I used two of the m.2 sockets. My boot is from m.2 3.0 and the other is the new faster version 4.0 which is supported by this cpu if the motherboard supports it.

• I am using an 11th gen i7, and the i5 is listed as supported (as is the i9), so you would have plenty of upgrade options for the future.
