I see no answer to your question a year later. I have my unit connected via digital cable from a Sony Blu Ray player. The output to my headphone preamp is thru the speaker connections. My headphones are Stax Lambdas (circa 1995), and the 3020 can drive them louder than I care to listen (ear splitting volume). The sound that I get from this setup is very clean and balanced. Hopefully, you picked up a pair of good headphones and are enjoying the sound you are getting from them. I'm looking at putting my Stax unit back into the vinyl side of my system and purchasing Sennheiser HD800s to listen via the DAC. Enjoy!
