Modem is different from the router, some companies make a combination units (Modem and the WIFI Router), I personally prefer to have this as separate units. Modem brings the internet connection from cable or telephone company to your router and router distribute the internet connection to your devices (phone, TV, Etc..) that connect to internet.

A router on the other hand is a device for routing traffic around your network, think of it as Grand Central Station, traffic comes in, people change trains and traffic goes back out, just like a router and it's traffic.

The cable modem provides a bridge between the outside world (Internet) and the inside world (your computer). Your internet provider usually provides your computer one dynamic IP address to the cable modem which is your computer's link to the outside world. Adding a router uses the one dynamic IP address provided to the cable modem as a link to the outside world and additionally creates multiple internal IP address as needed. One for each device in your home allowing every devise in your home to connect to the outside world. The router is kinda like a traffic cop directing multiple cars to one lane of traffic outside the city.

Cable modem connected to cable (like Comcast cable coming to your house) , router then connects to cable modem. There are products that combines both cable modem and wifi router as well. If you buy this, then just buy one. Otherwise you need buy two (cable modem and WiFi router.
