• Hi Nicole, this is not compatible with Verizon FIOS and does require cable internet service.

• Yes; an internet connection is required. I purchased this modem when my cable company increated our spped to 40MBs, but my old modem wouldn't "recognize" that speed. Good low-priced solution.
