Jerry, Some Modems will serve as a router and some even provide wireless connectivity. This wireless router will provide more options, better wireless signal and security. However, it is not a Modem. Charter Spectrum may supply an additional router with the modem for more money each month (rental). In the long run, it may pay to do do a little research and asking what is provided. But, it may be more cost effective in the long run to become just tech savy enough to make the right choice.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You need both a modem and a router. This is just a router. There are Router/Modem combos available, or you need two seperate devices. In my area Charter Spectrum provides a modem without a monthly charge.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You will still need the modem.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, you need that Charter cable modem. That's the item that feeds the Internet to your apartment. You can split the signal using a wireless router. With Charter, you can either pay for their modem / wireless all-in-one box or you can buy your own wireless router. I find that owning your own wireless router is better. Charter's equipment is not top-notch (just the cable modem they offer, not their wireless one). A good $100+ Netgear router will do the job in a 1200 sq ft two-story apartment (as you described). Try to get the router to be somewhere in the middle of the apartment. That would help in balancing the signal so all devices get adequate coverage. By using Charter's cable modem and a good wireless router, your set up should be a good one.
