“I plan on using the USB wifi adapter on a PC with Windows 7. Will the adapter pickup a "hot spot" signal from an iPhone or iPad? The PC had a built in NIC/w wifi we would connect to. It stopped working and troubleshooting points to a bad NIC.”

It most definitely will. That's exactly what I used mine for. The difference being I had a PC that didn't have WiFi. I used the hotspot from my iPhone for internet connection until I got a home network setup.
