No, what you would do is put the device as far as you can from the modem so that it still receives good signal, getting it closer to your room. So if your room is opposite side of house, then you might put the extender half way between your modem and room so that it still receives good signal from the modem, then shoots that further to your room.

So, you need to put it in a location with a strong signal that is close to the area you are trying to reach. Then, it will give more range to the signal, but not amplify it.
