The NetGear EX6100 AC 750 will work with MOST brands of routers. The setup must be done in the same room with the host router and yes you can encrypt the password as it has the same setup options as your router. It will offer the same password protection as your host router.

Updating the router to WPA security resolved the issue and the extender worked fine. You can use the same password for your router to connect to the extender so you don't have to remember multiple passwords.
