The 300 will only do 2.4Ghz; many newer tech items will operate better or are designed to operate on the 5Ghz band. I believe most 1200 are dual band. The 1200 also has a higher speed rating. But the speed is actually controlled by the plan you get from your ISP (as far as internet is concerned. Non-Internet traffic is controlled by the speed of your network interface to your computer.
