There are several reasons... 1.) It is most likely going to be a different cellular provider than your Smart Phone is using. Of course that part could be good or bad depending on your service coverage. 2.) Always makes sense to not put all your eggs in one basket as they say. You can use up the data on this device without consuming any of the data on your phone. This could effectively mean that the amount of your phone data and the amount of this device data could be added together giving you the combined amount of both. It may or may not be "cheaper" for that consideration though. 3.) This device has it's own battery....This means you're not killing your smart phone battery to provide WiFi as well as the usual cell phone functions. It also means that you can keep using your phone and provide WiFi at the same time. A function that only the more recent smart phone services can provide, along with the later smart phones. Now, you can have your Wifi and use it all the time.
