“I was first advised to buy the Netgear N50 WifI cable modem router for my service from Metrocast. Later I was told that is a good router but if I could get one with "dual band" that would be better . So is the N600 router with DOCSIS 3.0 the correct one”

This is a dual band router. What this means is that there are 2 WIFI signals being broadcast. 2.4 and 5.0 ghz. The 2.4 is the "older" wifi. Most newer products have the 5.0 ghz and this allows higher speeds, however the signal doesn't travel as far as 2.4ghz. The 5.0 works best for speeds above 24mbps service, since the 2.4 is usually capped at that speed.
