Via ethernet cable, you will have a hard wired and much faster connection. It doesn't need to be connected to a PC to pick up the wireless signal however.

If the Internet connection is working on your PC from the port in the first place, plugging the router would do nothing. This modem comes in with a built in wifi connection. If the device you are trying to connect wireless isn't working, like your laptop, something is wrong with your adapter or many other things. If it never came with wireless, your best solution is to buy a USB wireless adapter.
