This is only a Modem. You would also need to purchase a WiFi router - just as the Netgear Orbi system. If you're looking to improve the signal strength of WiFi, a mesh router like Orbi is what you are looking for. This cable modem will get rid of the ComCast equipment fee and provide a more stable connection - but yes, you also need to purchase WiFi.

This modem will not increase your speeds it will just eliminate the modem rental cost. The distance the signal travels depends on where you place it. In order to get the wifi and ethernet connections you had with the Comcast device you'll also need to buy a router to work with the cm1200 modem. I would get a Nighthawk router for ease of set up and if you need tech support as you are a novice you only have one number to call to get tech support. I would advise a top of the line router as you'll get more features and antennas to help getting the signals where you want them.
