“I am being told by my cable tech that this is a ‘bridge’ modem and is not the modem I should have ordered to work with the cable service. I see no comments in the product description information to that effect. What is my alternative modem?”

Call your cable company tech support and ask if this modem cm1200 will work with there system. It should but you will also need a router to use with the modem for your ethernet connection and your wifi.
