This can be used as your primary Wifi router or as a range extender. My setup I have the worthless U-Verse modem hardwired to this router and use this router to create my wifi network. This is very powerful and should give you much for range than your current wifi router.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes you and do that. Access point mode
Sorry, there was a problem. Using it wirelessly you have to make sure that your router can reach it, but with the antennas it has the range to pick up the signal where most devices will not get a signal. My 13 year old son set up this up himself in about 5 minutes wirelessly in a room that had no WiFi being that it is on the other side of the house from where the router is setup.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No need to hardwire it. That is the point of it being a WiFi extender. I placed this on the other side of my house opposite my router and it received the signal with no problems. You can put your LAN wires from a device that does not have WiFi into any of the 4 LAN inputs in the extender.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can use an ethernet connection directly from your router to the Nighthawk, but you really don't need to. I have my Nighthawk installed in a room near the center of my second floor, with my wireless router two rooms away. Any farther, and I don't think the wireless router would send a reliable signal to the Nighthawk. With my setup, the Nighthawk gives me a full 5 bars all the way to one end of my second floor, and 4 bars to the other end at my office. It even gets 5 bars on my first floor.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No you can't hardwire it to your modem. You connect it wirelessly to your existing wireless and then setup a new ssid and rebroadcast it to extend the range.
