It will have its own password on it to start but then you’ll be able to change it to whatever you want afterwards so if you want to keep whatever you had previously you can. However I did have to let xfinity know that I no longer needed to rent their router anymore so that they could stop charging me for that and also they sent a signal to the one I purchased and made the switch. Definitely recommend buying your own. Should have done this years ago when I first got wifi!
