What is the best cable modem to pair with this thing? null

Really depends on your internet provider . I purchased the netgear modem that can produce up to 10 gigs a second . They paired perfectly and I am very happy with my internet speeds .

Netgear CM1000. Don’t pay cox, get it and it will pay for itself if you are going to buy the nighthawk.
