I did not have to choose. You will use an app to setup your modem and router.

The wifi bands are separate so you tell the device which wifi band you want to to connect to.

You can log in on the your device on either, both are broadcasted. If you dont see the 5g then your equipment isnt 5g compatible. You can setuo the router yo nake the decisions on this as well.

If you have to call Netgear and they will help you connect.  I think it is band 5.
