“I am using a ATTnXdPRMS router with poor coverage. Can I plug this unit into the ethernet cable upstairs and get better reception? I have tried 2 different types of repeaters and they have the same issues. No ethernet port on my laptop so not an option”

You should obtain better coverage, though you will need to connect to a different WiFi depending on your location. Most devices will auto-select the best choice. Adding an Ethernet connection to your laptop is also an option; just locate and purchase a USB WiFi adapter.
