You need some type of plan to get data delivered to you. The router just delivers it to your devices

Of course you have to pay for a plan that allows desired speed. A router does nothing but time slice resources for connected devices. routers slow down your data if anything. Routers have a feature called QOS (quality of service). One can set a particular connected device to take priority over other connected devices. Routers really don't have a huge amount of RAM. They are not designed to hold data packets but multiplex data.
