If you're purchasing a standalone router like this one, all you need to ensure is that it will connect to whichever modem you get. Of course, you would have to get a modem which is compatible with whichever type of service you get (be it DSL or cable). If you wind up getting a gateway (which generally combines the functions of a modem and router) but would prefer to still use a separate router such as this, you would want to ensure that you could put the gateway device in what is called bridge mode.
